Sarah K. Benning is an artist and DIY designer working within the realm of contemporary embroidery. She creates one-of-a-kind hand-stitched artworks and thoughtfully designed DIY kits and digital embroidery patterns.

Over time, Sarah developed a visual vocabulary and personal aesthetic featuring vibrant, densely stitched images of house plants and home interiors with bold black outlines that continues to characterize her work to this day. Each of Sarah’s works begins as a drawing—often made directly on the fabric with whatever pen or pencil is within reach—before it is meticulously hand-stitched.

In 2020, Sarah began incorporating paint into her embroidered works, a shift that pushed the scale a style of work in new directions. Forgoing tradition and the often rigid parameters of conventional western needlework, Sarah uses just a few techniques to build the surfaces and textures of her work—the complexity of each piece stemming from the composition itself and deliberate use of color.
